Grant awarded for Our Mission In Motion, a mobile mammography outreach program reaching more than 2,500 women annually
NASHVILLE – Saint Thomas Medical Partners (STMP) is proud to announce it has received a $75,000 grant for the Our Mission in Motion (OMIM) program from Susan G. Komen Central Tennessee. The grant award given by Susan G. Komen Central Tennessee will provide screening mammography through a mobile health unit within 11 of the 42-county Susan G. Komen Central Tennessee service area.
Our Mission In Motion (OMIM) is a mobile mammography outreach program of Saint Thomas Health bringing screening mammography to 2,550 women annually within the Susan G. Komen Central Tennessee service areas. OMIM specifically targets uninsured, low-income women, and the mobile mammography unit travels five to six days per week visiting community clinics, health departments, banks, schools, and churches, and reaches employed women at work sites, ensuring multiple points of access.
Since its inception in June 2011, the OMIM program has screened 17,554 women, diagnosed 59 breast cancers, and visited more than 240 venues to bring screening mammography and breast health education to women. During the 2018-2019 grant period, OMIM will provide more than 500 free mammograms to qualifying women through strategically scheduled events.
“Saint Thomas Medical Partners and Our Mission in Motion continues its strong partnership with Susan G. Komen Central Tennessee. These grants support our ability to serve more women across Middle Tennessee and enable us to bring potentially life-saving mammograms to many women who might otherwise not be able to care for their health,” said Yvette Doran, President and CEO of Saint Thomas Medical Partners.
The grant will allow OMIM to provide access to annual mammography screening resulting in early detection and a reduction in breast cancer mortality. Mobile mammography eliminates both time and transportation barriers to increase the number of women having annual mammograms. The OMIM program supports the STMP and Susan G. Komen objectives of increasing the availability and affordability of breast health services in Middle Tennessee communities and developing partnerships with health providers to reach uninsured, underserved, low income and minority women. The OMIM program also works closely with employers in Middle Tennessee counties to deliver mammography to female employees on their work premises.
