Plans for the facility include multiple gyms, an indoor walking track, strength and cardio fitness room and more

Crossville – The Crossville City Council will hold a work session at 2 p.m. today, June 6, to discuss design options for the proposed indoor recreation center, according to a report by the Crossville Chronicle.

The meeting comes on the heels of controversy over the project’s price tag following a public notice placed in the Crossville Chronicle in April regarding the acquisition of a $55 million “tax-exempt general obligation bond.” At the time, sources close to the deal informed The Upper Cumberland Business Journal (UCBJ) that such a bond may force the city of Crossville to raise taxes threefold.

But, In late April, the city unanimously rescinded its choice to proceed with the Bond purchase following public outcry.

“Tax increases are never a good thing on a business,” Crossville Mayor R.J. Crawford told the UCBJ. “It adds to the cost side of doing business. For me, if that is the option and direction the council wish to move forward on, then I would not be willing to support it. I will do everything I can to mitigate the tax burden for business and residences. … We are waiting on the architects to come back with those options.”

Plans for the facility include multiple gyms, an indoor walking track, strength and cardio fitness room and space for fitness classes, a multi-purpose court and an indoor pool. The work session is set for 2 p.m. at Crossville City Hall at 392 N. Main Street in Crossville in Conference Room 317. Following the work session, the council will hold a special session at 5 p.m.
