Rock, country and blues will be the foundation
The Ugly Mug Bar and Grill (UMBG) will soon open at 70 I B Maynard Street in Spencer across 111 from the Peacock and next to the Spencer City Park, and the menu will be “handcrafted and delicious,” according to the Van Buren-Spencer Chamber of Commerce (Chamber).
“I sure can’t wait to find a favorite,” according to a post by the Chamber. “There will also be ample amounts of outdoor seating for the summer months, did you see that fire pit?? And I know we’re sure to enjoy every band night hosted in this establishment!”
The Chamber says they are eager to welcome UMBG to the community.

“(Ownership) has put so much time and effort into this place to make it something special,” said the Chamber. “The attention to detail is incredible, in every step of the way he was creating an environment for you to enjoy and take pride in. … There is a little something for everyone in this establishment.”
All 41 trees cut in construction of the building was repurposed for use on the property, according to the Chamber.
“All good things take time, we hope to welcome this business with open arms in 2025,” said the Chamber. The Ugly Mug will keep us updated on all things dealing with grand openings, hours and more. We cannot wait to support this small business”
According to ownership, the bar is about 60 days out from opening.
“I don’t have an official opening date,” according to ownership. “I never wanted to open in the winter, but it is what it is. As of today, I am most likely 60 or so days out from opening. Many variables, and we are doing our best.”
What is the vibe? It’s all about music. Rock, country and blues will be the foundation.
“As you will find out, music will be an important part of The Ugly Mug,” according to ownership. “We have a stage and will be providing a platform for musicians. Both locally and from parts afar. Solo artists and bands.”
