Expansion is an inspiring new chapter in EB’s journey

One of Cookeville’s most beloved community-driven businesses, the Exceptional Bean (EB), a nonprofit coffee shop located at 55 N. Walnut Avenue in Cookeville with a mission to provide meaningful employment for individuals with disabilities, has expanded and become even more exceptional.

Tim McDermott, Cookeville Regional Medical Center’s (CRMC) chief financial officer, led the charge to find the perfect local coffee shop for the hospital.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to partner with The Exceptional Bean to serve hospital staff, patients and families,” said McDermott.

EB has opened the doors to its second location inside the entrance of CRMC, and the expansion is an inspiring new chapter in EB’s journey. The mission is to serve the Upper Cumberland region, not just with quality coffee, but also with compassion and opportunity.

“We are thrilled to have now the opportunity to serve our community from our second location inside CRMC,” said owner Cigi England.

CiGi and Michael England founded EB in July 2022 hoping to serve more than just Coffee. They wanted to change lives. EB employs over 30 individuals of all abilities in a supportive and uplifting environment. Their motto, “Be Kind. Drink Coffee.”, guides everything they do, from the smiles behind the counter to the new offerings on a growing menu including “Exceptional Teas,” which are “packed with natural ingredients and functional benefits, the teas are more than just refreshing—they’re revitalizing.”

With a fresh look, a new product line and the same heart-centered mission, EB’s expansion is more than a business move; it’s a reminder that every cup of coffee can come with a side of purpose. According to the charming shop, its purpose is a “mission disguised as a coffee shop.” Now it’s one with twice the reach and double the impact.

Michael Rose has worked at the original EB for a while. This was his second day at EB CRMC, and just as he did at the original, Rose brought joy with every cup.

“Have an exceptional day,” he exclaims with pride after each service.

EB’s growth proves that kindness, community and coffee go hand in hand.
