Consumers urged to watch for deceptive “you’ve won” dealership promotions
(UCBJ) – Tennessee regulators are warning consumers about a rise in misleading auto dealership mailers that resemble scratch-off tickets, pull-tabs and game-style promotions promising prizes.
Officials say complaints have climbed over the past two years, with many ads using codes or symbols that suggest customers have “won” something, often leading to disappointing offers once they arrive at the dealership.
“Some individuals are breaking Tennessee’s motor vehicle advertising laws by using flashy, illegal promotions to lure customers,” said Motor Vehicle Commission Executive Director Denise Lawrence.
Since late 2024, regulators have issued $35,000 in fines tied to these violations.
Officials remind consumers that dealerships are responsible for all advertising tied to their name and that false or exaggerated claims like “Name your own price” or “Lowest price in the south” are prohibited.
Consumers can verify licenses or file complaints through the Tennessee Motor Vehicle Commission.
