The MFx Glove 2.0 is more than a proof of concept – it’s a clinically inspired

What began as a student prototype at Tennessee Tech is now a fast-growing medical device company reshaping the way people manage hand pain. Téa Phillips, a local engineer and entrepreneur, is on a mission to improve lives with a groundbreaking medical device: the MetaFlex Glove (MFx).
Designed to relieve arthritis pain and improve hand function, the glove has already earned accolades and investor attention—including a spot on the main stage at LaunchTN’s 36/86 Festival.
“The MFx is incredibly important to me,” says Phillips, who developed the concept while a student at Tennessee Tech University. Inspired by her grandmother’s struggle with arthritis, Phillips was determined to create a solution that combined functionality with comfort. “She used to hold a tennis ball and wrap a sock around her hand to keep it open. She was very innovative. That spirit really shaped this product.”
The MFx Glove blends two essential therapies—compression and grip strengthening—into a wearable device that looks more like athletic gear than a medical tool. It provides relief without requiring users to change their daily routines. Its patented resistance bands help keep the hand open while building strength, and the glove’s stylish design and touchscreen-compatible fingertips make it practical for everyday wear.
Now in its second generation, the MFx Glove 2.0 is more than a proof of concept—it’s a clinically inspired, user-driven solution for arthritis, repetitive strain and post-injury recovery. Success has brought about Medicare approval and rapid company growth. Phillips isn’t just launching a product, she’s building a movement in medical wearables rooted in empathy, engineering and entrepreneurship.
Evidence-Based Innovation, Redesigned
The MetaFlex Glove remains the first wearable to seamlessly combine compression, grip strengthening, and finger stretching in a single, day-to-night device. The latest 2.0 iteration includes:
- Adjustable resistance bands at each fingertip to stretch and strengthen hands in motion
- Touchscreen-compatible pads so users can type, swipe, and scroll without removing the glove
- A non-slip grip palm for secure handling during daily tasks or athletic routines
- A range of five sizes (XS–XL) for a better, more personalized fit
“These upgrades reflect what we heard from real users—people want a glove that doesn’t interrupt their lifestyle,” Phillips explains. “They want something that’s therapeutic, but still wearable, stylish and functional.”
Real Relief, Real Results
The MFx Glove uses gentle compression to reduce swelling, stiffness, and pain, while the internal resistance bands activate muscles and improve joint mobility
Growth Backed by Recognition—and Results
MFx has gained national attention and multiple awards, including:
- Eagle Works Grand Prize and Social Impact, Tennessee Tech University, 2018
- Global Sustainability Award, Global Council for the Promotion of International Trade (GCPIT), 2022
- Crowd Favorite, Start Here Pitch Competition, 2022
- Finalist, LaunchTN’s 36|86 Festival, 2023
- 3rd Prize, LaunchTN Student Edition, 2018
This year, MFx became available at VA Medical Centers in Butler, PA and Madison, WI, validating its use in clinical rehabilitation for veterans. Behind the scenes, Phillips closed a $500,000 pre-seed funding overcommitted round due to early believers in her vision. It’s FDA and MDEL registered, meaning it is approved for use as a medical device in the United States and Canada…Yes, the company will be launching soon in Canada.
Phillips doesn’t sugarcoat the startup life. “You’ll hear ‘no’ a lot. You’ll want to quit,” she says. “But you have to surround yourself with people smarter than you, listen to real users and keep moving forward.”
In addition to building the product, Phillips has expanded her team since the company is experiencing rapid growth. She recently brought on Certified Hand Therapist Justin Stehr as Chief Clinical Officer and Brand Manager Megan Cole, the company’s first full-time employee. The company’s projected growth will require additional roles as they prepare for the launch of new products and new markets.
Mission-Driven from the Start
The origin of the MFx Glove remains at the heart of its mission. Inspired by her grandmother, Phillips set out to create a product that’s not just functional but empowering for its user. The MFx Glove is a fusion of science and compassion.
Originally from Shelbyville, Phillips became the first in her family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. She worked at the Y-12 National Security Complex before returning to Cookeville to fully pursue MetaFlex through The Biz Foundry entrepreneur center.
Her journey has been featured on entrepreneurial podcasts like The GSD Factor and Powered by Her, where she speaks candidly about resilience, product-market fit and staying mission-focused.
What’s Next: More Versions, More Vision
Phillips is already testing a sports recovery version of MetaFlex, designed for athletes and active users focused on injury prevention and post-training recovery. Future wearable concepts are also in early development—many born from a simple mantra: “Everything that annoys me becomes an opportunity to invent something better.” For product information, go to MetaFlexGlove.com .
One of MetaFlex’s biggest milestones is its approval for Medicare coverage, which opens the door to broader access. The company announced to me that they are also preparing for a launch into the Canadian market.
As MetaFlex grows from local ideas to global brand, one thing remains unchanged: Téa Phillips is helping people grip life with confidence, comfort and style—and she’s only getting started.
