Local Collections Climb
(UCBJ) – Sales tax collections across Putnam County increased 5.1% in August 2026 compared with the same month last year, according to Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter.
“Some of the larger changes may be corrections from previous months,” Porter said.
Total sales tax collections for August 2026 reached $5.93 million (compared to $5.63 million in August 2025), an increase of $301,114. Among the municipalities, Algood recorded the largest increase at 13.5%, with collections rising to $555,794 compared to $480,496 in August 2025.
Baxter collections increased 7.7% to $140,425, up from $129,597 and Putnam County increased 6.4%, from $636,669 in August 2025 to $679,980 in August 2026, Cookeville accounting for the largest dollar increase in the county.
Collections in the city rose 3.8%, from $4.26 million in August 2025 to $4.43 million in August 2026. Monterey collections increased 1.3%, from $124,675 in August 2025 to $126,297 in 2026.
In July, sales tax collections across the entire county increased 6.8%.
For the 2026-27 fiscal year, the county has generated $12.05 million in sales tax collections, compared to $11.33 million during the same period of the previous fiscal year.
