Airport Naming Proposal To Be Considered By Metro Nashville Airport Authority in September
(UCBJ) – Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Nashville International Airport announced Friday their intent to name Nashville International Airport in honor of Dolly Parton. The goal is to create a lasting tribute to the Tennessee icon and her impact on the state and around the world.
Following Parton’s death earlier this week, Lee spoke with her team about the proposal.
According to a release from the State of Tennessee, Parton’s team was appreciative of the outpouring of support and touched by the idea. They hope the tribute can serve as another example of her enduring impact and ability to bring people together.
“Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,” Lee said. “From her rural mountain home in East Tennessee to global stages, Dolly carried the Volunteer Spirit with her. At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith and kindness.”
Born in Sevier County, Parton became a global icon whose music, creativity and unmistakable voice reflected the heart and spirit of Tennessee. Her influence extended beyond music through decades of service and philanthropy, according to the release.
Through the Dollywood Foundation and Imagination Library, Parton has helped provide hundreds of millions of free books to children worldwide, promoting literacy and helping children reach their full potential.
The proposal reflects the airport’s role as the gateway to Music City and Tennessee, according to Doug Kreulen, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority. He said Parton’s values of dignity, kindness and opportunity align with the airport’s mission to treat travelers with the same level of care regardless of their circumstances.
“BNA is the front door to Music City, and with that comes a responsibility to reflect the very best of who we are as a community,” Kreulen said. “Dolly’s remarkable legacy reminds us that what makes Nashville special is our ability to welcome people from every walk of life.”
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s current naming policy and Lee’s proposal to rename the airport will be addressed at the authority’s meeting Thursday, Sept. 17.
Additional details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
