Putnam is bucking a positive trend in business formation

In Putnam County, July business licenses totaled 45 (32 manufacturing and 13 retail), down from June, according to numbers by Putnam County Clerk Wayne Nabors. In June, Putnam had 49 new businesses licensed either new or continued (28 manufacturing and 21 retail).

Putnam seems to be bucking a positive trend in business formation. According to Census.gov, business applications nationally for June 2024 were 431,246, an increase of 1.7% compared to May 2024. Business formations were also up in June, at 28,166, a slight increase of 0.9% nationally compared to May.

“The projected business formations are forward looking, providing an estimate of the number of new business startups that will appear from the cohort of business applications in a given month,” according to Census.gov. “It does not provide an estimate of the total number of business startups that appeared within a specific month.”

The bureau is projecting that 28,166 new startups with payroll tax liabilities will form within 4 quarters of application from all the business applications filed. According to the organization, the Bureau can only state actual business formations within four quarters up to Dec. 2020 due to the forward-looking methods.
