Jobless numbers have also improved statewide

The labor market is cooling nationwide due to a slowdown in hiring (particularly in the federal government) in the private sector. In August, the unemployment rate nationally reached a four-year high in August.

In September, that number has leveled off thus far, and weekly jobless claims are low, but reports are showing that there is now a greater number of long-term unemployed. Unemployment has improved in every Upper Cumberland county, with Clay dropping from 6.1% to 4.2%. That is the biggest improvement in the area, but Pickett also improved drastically, from 6% to 4.5%.

Warren County has a rate of 4.1%, down from 5.2%. Elsewhere, Cannon County sits at 3%, down from 3.7%.

Cumberland County sits at 4.2% and DeKalb County landed at 4.1%, down from 5.2. Fentress stands at 3.6% while Van Buren landed at 3.3%. Jackson County stands at 3.8% in February, and Macon County’s number stands at 3%.

Overton sits at 3.3% and Putnam stands at 3.7%. Smith landed at 3.2% and White County’s rate is 4.3%, down from 5.3% last month.
