(UCBJ) – For one more year, the sights, sounds and traditions of the Putnam County Fair will remain at the historic Jefferson Avenue fairgrounds for a milestone 100th anniversary celebration.
While anticipation continues to build around the new Putnam County Fairgrounds and Event Center currently under development adjacent to the new Putnam County Convention Center on Tennessee Avenue, construction timelines mean the 2026 fair will once again be held at its longtime home.
“Significant progress has been made at the new site, including completion of the midway area, five permanent concession stands, the large livestock barn and the main stage. Most of the bleachers have also been installed, with work continuing on additional seating sections and covered grandstand areas,” according to Putnam County Fair Board President Brenda Gentry.
The decision reflects the Fair Board’s commitment to preserving the quality of the fair experience while ensuring the new facility is fully prepared to support the agricultural exhibits, livestock competitions, entertainment venues and community activities that have defined the Putnam County Fair for more than a century.
Construction Progress Meets Infrastructure Challenges
While much of the new outdoor arena and midway is completed, key infrastructure components remain unfinished at the barns. The access roads needed to transport equipment and animals around the agricultural facilities are still under construction, and electrical infrastructure delays have created additional challenges. Officials noted transformers needed to support the barns’ power demands were on back-order, limiting the ability to fully support livestock exhibitions including beef, dairy, hog and goat competitions, for this year’s fair.
Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter says most of the Tennessee Avenue fairgrounds campus is already complete or would have been ready in time for the 2026 fair. The primary challenge involved the agricultural facilities, where unexpected delays in the delivery of electrical components needed to support the livestock barns impacted final preparations.
Rather than divide events between two locations or compromise the quality of the fair experience, organizers elected to host the entire 2026 fair at the Jefferson Avenue site while work progresses on what is expected to become one of the region’s most significant agricultural and event facilities. The decision allows fairgoers, exhibitors and vendors to enjoy a complete and seamless event while ensuring all aspects of the fair remain together during this historic centennial year.
More Than a Fairgrounds: A Vision for Economic Growth
The move to the new site represents far more than a change of address. County leaders envision a year-round destination capable of hosting agricultural events, trade shows, conventions, concerts, community celebrations and regional gatherings that will bring new visitors and economic activity to Putnam County.
The new fairgrounds campus, combined with the adjacent Putnam County Convention Center, is expected to create opportunities that extend well beyond the annual fair.
Together, they will strengthen Putnam County’s ability to attract:
- larger regional events
- agricultural exhibitions
- conferences
- entertainment opportunities that generate tourism and economic activity throughout the Upper Cumberland.
Part of a larger Tennessee Avenue development encompassing approximately 187 acres acquired by Putnam County, the fairgrounds span roughly 129 acres – providing significantly more room for livestock exhibitions, entertainment venues, parking, future expansion and year-round programming than the current Jefferson Avenue site.
Shan Stout, Director of Tourism for the Putnam County Convention & Visitors Bureau, says the new fairgrounds facilities will be nearly four times larger than the Jefferson Avenue venue. The bigger space helps create opportunities to attract larger events, expand tourism activity and support future economic growth. The larger footprint positions Putnam County to compete for agricultural exhibitions, trade events, festivals and conventions that can generate hotel stays, restaurant traffic and visitor spending throughout the community.
Why the Jefferson Avenue Property Still Matters
The Jefferson Avenue fairgrounds property was once expected to play a significant role in financing the development of the new fairgrounds and event center campus on Tennessee Avenue. Over the years, county leaders explored opportunities to market the approximately 41-acre site for commercial redevelopment, with discussions ranging from major retail recruitment to mixed-use development concepts. Multiple purchase option agreements were considered as developers evaluated the property’s potential. However, changing market conditions, development timelines and evolving county priorities ultimately led the Putnam County Commission to retain ownership of the property by declining to renew the most recent purchase option.
One of the most significant factors influencing the future of the Jefferson Avenue property was a proposed Veterans Administration outpatient clinic. County leaders reserved a portion of the fairgrounds site for consideration as a regional VA health care facility serving veterans throughout the Upper Cumberland.
Multiple developers pursued the project, and for nearly two years the possibility of a VA clinic influenced redevelopment discussions surrounding the property. Once the Neal Street location was chosen, the county regained greater flexibility in determining the future of the Jefferson Avenue site. The outcome contributed to the decision to retain ownership of the property while construction continues on the new fairgrounds campus.
The decision proved beneficial with the Tennessee Avenue campus moving closer to completion. By retaining ownership, the county maintained the flexibility needed to host the 2026 Putnam County Fair at the Jefferson Avenue site for the centennial event while work continues on the new campus. The decision ensures this milestone fair can be held at the historic grounds before the transition to the new facility is complete.
The Centennial Putnam County Agricultural & Industrial Fair will run from July 30 through Aug. 8, 2026.
Fair officials tell UCBJ that, as always, the fair will be a celebration of agriculture, youth achievement, entertainment and community – a reminder that while facilities may evolve, the values that have defined the fair for a century remain unchanged. At the same time, excitement continues to build for what comes next.
Positioning Putnam County for the Next 100 Years
Mayor Porter said he is excited about the future of the fairgrounds campus and its connection to the new Putnam County Convention Center and planned Expo Center.
He says he believes the combined facilities will create new opportunities to attract tourism-driven events, conferences, exhibitions and regional gatherings that generate economic activity throughout Putnam County.
According to Porter, the final piece of the long-term vision is the Expo Center, which is currently out for bid. Once completed, the fairgrounds, convention center and expo center will function as a unified campus designed to support year-round events and position Putnam County as a destination for agriculture, entertainment, conventions and tourism.
The combined fairgrounds and convention center campus has the potential to become a major regional destination, capable of hosting events that generate hotel stays, restaurant traffic and visitor spending while showcasing Putnam County as a center for agriculture, commerce and community events.
In many ways, the 2026 fair represents both a farewell and a preview – one final celebration of a familiar home before the next chapter of the Putnam County Fair begins.

The 100th Anniversary Putnam County Agricultural & Industrial Fair will take place July 30 through Aug. 8, 2026, at the historic Jefferson Avenue Fairgrounds.

When the gates eventually open at the new Tennessee Avenue fairgrounds, visitors will experience a facility designed not only to preserve the fair’s rich agricultural heritage but also to support Putnam County’s future growth. Until then, the Jefferson Avenue fairgrounds will once again welcome families, exhibitors and visitors for a centennial celebration that honors the past while looking ahead to the future of the Putnam County Fair.
