(UCBJ) – Tennessee’s unemployment rate held steady at 3.6% in April, marking the third straight month the state has maintained the same rate, according to new data from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
The seasonally adjusted rate remained unchanged from March and was slightly above the 3.5% rate recorded in April 2025. Tennessee continued to outperform the national unemployment rate, which measured 4.3% in April. The U.S. rate was unchanged from March and up from 4.2% one year ago.
Employers across Tennessee added 1,200 nonfarm jobs between March and April. The largest monthly gains came in construction, followed by durable goods manufacturing and accommodation and food services. On a year-over-year basis, Tennessee added 900 nonfarm jobs. The biggest increases were seen in health care and social assistance, state government, and administrative, support and waste services.
State labor officials also highlighted Tennessee’s Youth Employment Program, known as YEP, as part of the latest workforce update.
The program gives Tennesseans ages 14-24 opportunities to gain work experience, build job skills and explore career paths while earning wages. Employers participating in the program can also identify and develop future workforce talent while the state handles program costs and administration.
Thousands of students and young workers across Tennessee have participated in the program.
More information about YEP is available through YEP Tennessee.
