COOKEVILLE – At the recent Putnam County Commission meeting, Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter issued a proclamation honoring Volunteer State Community College (Vol State) and recognizing the more than 830 county residents who have received a degree or certificate from Vol State in the last 50 years. Currently 815 Putnam County students attend Vol State.

This year, Vol State is celebrating 50 years of service to residents of Putnam County and the 10 other counties in the college service area. Groundbreaking for the Vol State Gallatin campus was held on a cold and blustery day in November 1970. The college opened for classes in October 1971. Vol State began managing its Cookeville campus in 2016.
