Justin P. Wilson Cumberland Trail State Park hosts wellness fair

May 4 event part of Healthy Park, Healthy Person program

CUMBERLAND COUNTY– Justin P. Wilson Cumberland Trail State Park will host a free event on May 4 to promote health for all participants.

The Spring Wellness Fair is part of the Healthy Parks, Healthy Person initiative in Tennessee and will be an extension of National ParkRx Day scheduled nationwide April 28, where the idea is to prescribe outdoor activity for better physical and mental health. The event at Cumberland Trail will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 4 at the park’s Head of Sequatchie location in Pikeville in Cumberland County, a location normally open only one day each month.

The event will begin with a kick-off hike and presentation led by a Cumberland Trail ranger with fitness expert and Olympian Missy Kane, followed by activities including yoga, tai chi, forest immersion therapy, healthy concessions items and recipes, free vitals checks, health advice from state and community agencies and an Outdoor Fun Zone. No tickets are required.

“A lot of options in physical activity can be expensive. Our Tennessee State Parks are not,” said Bobby Fulcher, park manager at Cumberland Trail. “This is an opportunity for people to get out, enjoy nature and be active, and it’s absolutely free.”

The Healthy Parks, Healthy Person program emphasizes that getting outside has been proven to improve physical and mental health. Under the program, people can go to an app that rewards you for getting outside and being active, with the opportunity to earn points that can be redeemed for rewards from Tennessee State Parks, from parks merchandise to rounds of golf and cabin stays.

Under the ParkRx Day program, health-care providers, park agencies, community groups, and other Park Prescription program leaders organize events and activities in parks and green spaces across the country, encouraging participants to improve their health and well-being by embracing the health benefits of nature.
