Food giveaway postponed, relocated to ease traffic congestion

COOKEVILLE – Cookeville Strong and the TTU Food Pantry have canceled this week’s Weekly Grocery Giveaway due to inclement weather and area power outages. The event will return next Friday at a new location. The event will be moving from the Putnam County Fairgrounds to the Putnam County Sports Complex at 497 Whitaker Springs Road. The event will open to the public at 10 AM.

Last Friday’s event drew over 450 cars to the area causing traffic to back up on to the main roads. The new location will allow the event organizer to serve the community more efficiently without causing a traffic disruption on the streets around the fairgrounds.

“We are very upset that we had to make the call to cancel this week’s event,” said event co-organizer Katelyn Steakley. “We will return next week ready to serve the community again and help those struggling with food loss after this week’s power outages.”

Event host Cookeville Strong, and partners Tennessee Tech Food Pantry and Putnam County Parks and Recreation, are receiving the perishable food boxes from The USDA Farmers to Families program weekly until sometime in the early spring. The boxes contain a variety of perishable foods including meats, cheeses, vegetables, fruits, and one gallon of milk.
