The MS District is “intended primarily to provide a centralized, compact location for hospitals, clinics, medical and dental offices and laboratories

Thursday night, the Cookeville City Council set a date for a hearing on an amendment to the Zoning Code relative to methadone clinics in the city.

The public hearing date was set for May 2.

Earlier this year, Cedar Recovery (CR) requested a hearing on the amendment that would allow methadone clinics like CR as a “use by permitted right” in the Medical Services (MS) Zoning District following a commission denial of a request to rezone the trac at 1225 S. Willow Avenue in Cookeville from Commercial Industrial to MS.

The MS District is “intended primarily to provide a centralized, compact location for hospitals, clinics, medical and dental offices and laboratories; to protect medically related facilities in the area from adverse influences, and to promote the establishment of complementary facilities,” according to the zoning code.

This will be Cedar recovery’s third attempt at opening a clinic in the area. The first effort failed in Rickman when the company pulled out after feeling a lack of safety for staff following public outrage expressed at a town hall.

Maybe the third time is the charm for CR.
