One donor will have the chance to win a $500 Visa Gift Card

Cookeville – Blood Assurance wants to thank Putnam County residents.

This weekend, they are “giving a heartfelt thanks to Putnam County residents” by throwing a “community block party celebration.” On Saturday, the blood center is hosting a donor appreciation event and blood drive at its 155 West Broad Street location in Cookeville. It will take place from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Free refreshments, live music, a car show, bounce houses, a commemorative T-shirt and other giveaways will be available.

One donor will even have the chance to win a $500 Visa Gift Card.

“This is an opportunity for us to recognize the extraordinary community that is Cookeville,” said Jerry Antoine, regional director of operations for Blood Assurance. “These altruistic folks understand the importance of rolling up a sleeve and donating lifesaving blood.”

Blood Assurance opened its donation center doors in 2009. The nonprofit is the sole supplier of blood and blood products to Cookeville Regional Medical Center and is supported through an active community advisory board made up of local business owners, educators and first responders from around Putnam County.

“The support we’ve received over the last 14 years has been second-to-none,” according to Antoine.

Donors can visit www.bloodassurance.org/schedule, call 800-962-0628 or text BAGIVE to 999777, to schedule an appointment to donate at the event. Walk-ins will also be accepted.

To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental consent), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. Donors are asked to drink plenty of fluids — avoiding caffeine — and eat a meal that is rich in iron before donating.
