CMC Continues Longstanding Commitment to Maternity and Family Care

(UCBJ) – Covenant Health Women’s Care Cumberland (CHW), once known as Cumberland Women’s Healthcare and now a part of Cumberland Medical Group (CMG) in Cumberland County, has expanded. The Crossville-Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) participated in a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate.

The expansion will increase access to women’s healthcare, maternity services and pregnancy support for patients throughout Cumberland County and the Upper Cumberland region, according to a release.

That extra capacity meets increased demand for women and families in every stage of life.

“We are committed to ensuring women and families throughout the Upper Cumberland have access to exceptional healthcare services close to home,” said Jason Pilant, president and chief administrative officer of CMC. “This investment strengthens our ability to provide exceptional care close to home while helping us meet the needs of women and families across the Upper Cumberland for generations to come.”

Cumberland Medical Center (CMC) opened more than 76 years ago, and this expansion builds on a long legacy started by Dr. May Cravath Wharton, who helped establish the hospital in 1950.

“ … and reflects Covenant Health’s long-standing commitment to improving the health of the communities it serves,” according to the company.

The provider team includes:

  • OB-GYN Andrew Szaflarski, MD
  • Kendra Smith, certified nurse midwife
  • Makenzie Tabor, APRN, WHNP-BC

Thom Hassler, director of support services at CMC, spoke at the event.

“This celebration is about continuing a promise to the women and families of this region,” Hassler said. “Generations have relied on CMC for maternity care and women’s health services, and this milestone helps ensure that tradition continues for future generations.”

Leaders also recognized the Labor & Delivery team at CMC, which cares for hundreds of families each year and offers comprehensive care. Expectant parents have access to free childbirth education classes covering:

  • Labor and birth
  • Signs of labor
  • Breathing and relaxation techniques
  • Infant care
  • Feeding options
  • Newborn wellness

“In addition to maternity services, CMC serves as the region’s only Gold Cribs for Kids National Safe Sleep Hospital and is a Mothers’ Milk Bank of Tennessee Milk Drop Depot, supporting the health and well-being of newborns both locally and across the state,” according to the release. “The growth of Covenant Health Women’s Care Cumberland reflects Covenant Health’s mission of improving the quality of life through better health and demonstrates an ongoing commitment to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of women and families throughout the Upper Cumberland.”
