Averitt’s commitment to service extends beyond transportation
Averitt is proud to celebrate 55 years of service, growth, and community partnership, a milestone that began in the Upper Cumberland. What started as a small, local trucking company has grown into one of the nation’s most respected transportation and logistics providers, and the company is taking this anniversary as an opportunity to thank the region that made it all possible.
Today, Averitt employs nearly 1,000 associates in Cookeville and more than 7,000 across its network of over 100 locations throughout the South, Midwest and Southwest. The company’s footprint, influence, and capabilities have expanded significantly over the decades, yet its foundation remains deeply rooted in the community it calls home.
“Many people are surprised to learn that the innovations, culture, and service standards that shaped our company – and that serve Fortune 500 companies across the country every day – were built right here in the Upper Cumberland,” said Gary Sasser, who purchased the company in 1971. “For 55 years, this region has supported our associates, our families, and our mission. We’re deeply grateful, and we wouldn’t be who we are without this community.”
Averitt’s commitment to service extends beyond transportation. Through its nonprofit charitable organization, Averitt Charities, the company and its associates have donated more than $18 million to various causes and charities. Since 1990, the majority of those funds have been directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as part of the Averitt Cares for Kids program.
A cornerstone of Averitt’s culture is its Over 20 Team, a unique group of more than 1,600 associates who have been with the company for 20 or more years. These associates represent decades of cumulative experience and loyalty, reflecting a culture grounded in teamwork, stability, and shared purpose.
“These aren’t just milestones for our company; they’re shared achievements with the Upper Cumberland,” Sasser added. “Our roots are here. Our values were shaped here. And the support of this community has fueled every step of our journey for 55 years. I’m extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and even more excited about what’s down the road for our team and for the Upper Cumberland.”
