PUTNAM COUNTY – While nationwide housing starts are slowing according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Putnam County is bucking the trend setting an all-time record for the number of permits issued and the capital investment into that construction.

For the 2021-2022 fiscal year (July-June), Putnam County issued 436 permits for $89.4 million. New single family residential homes accounted for 245 of those permits. In comparison, the 2020-2021 fiscal year saw 382 permits issued for $61 million and 243 new homes.

June numbers showed 51 permits for $15.6 million, with 28 of those being new single family residential homes.  This is almost double the June 2021 totals of 26 permits for $3.8 million, with 16 being new homes.

Nationwide numbers were just released for May building permits.

Privately‐owned housing units authorized by building permits in May were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,695,000. This is 7% below the revised April rate of 1,823,000 but is 0.2% above the May 2021 rate of 1,691,000. Single‐family authorizations in May were at a rate of 1,048,000; this is 5.5% below the revised April figure of 1,109,000.

In Putnam County, the May 2022 permits increased 43.3% above the May 2021 permits issued.
