Proceeds will go to support the project
On July 25, the City of Cookeville will celebrate 75 years of the Cream City sign. The Cream City Ice Cream shop sign has shone brightly over Cookeville for 75 years.
The Ice Cream shop, like its sign, is a calling card and a landmark for the city. In 2023, the shop celebrated the 10th anniversary of its new owners, Chris and Karen Savage.
In 2013, the duo bought Cream City.
“We’re excited to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the iconic Cream City Sign! This historic Cookeville landmark has been lighting up the community since 1950, turning Cream City into a must-stop destination between Nashville and Knoxville,” according to the Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber of Commerce.
Cookeville’s CityScape has been awarded a downtown improvement Grant to rewire the sign’s original neon. The city wants to “help preserve the sign for another 75 years.”
The project costs are estimated at $100,000, with CityScape responsible for providing a 25% match. As part of the effort, CityScape is hosting its second annual Scoop for the Sign Day July 26 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. as part of the conservation efforts.
All proceeds will go to support the project.
“Join us in celebrating this milestone and stop by to see the sign glowing in all its neon glory,” according to the Chamber.
