Week of Welcome celebrates start of fall semester

A bevy of activities is scheduled for students to enjoy themselves the last weekend before classes officially begin on Monday.

COOKEVILLE – After a relatively quiet summer, Tennessee Tech University will come to life in a few days as the annual Week of Welcome activities crank up around campus.

The week kicks off on Thursday with Great Move-In Day, where more than 1,500 students are expected to begin moving into the residential halls.

“All of the residential life staff has worked very hard over the past two to three weeks preparing for the opening of the halls and Tech Village,” said Charlie Macke, Tech’s director of residential life.

Macke says more than 100 volunteers are slated to help students move into the dorms on Thursday, allowing for check-in to go relatively smooth and easy.

Because of the anticipated traffic associated with Great Move-In Day, there will be some changes to the flow of traffic around campus. From 7:30 a.m. until around 3 p.m. the eastbound lane of Ninth Avenue will be barricaded, and no traffic allowed through (redirected to continue heading north on Dixie Avenue and then turn east on 12th Street).  On Dixie Avenue, from Ninth Street to B Street, the current four lanes (two northbound/two southbound) will transition to three northbound lanes and one southbound lane.  The easternmost northbound lane will be designated for New Hall South/New Hall North vehicles. The middle lane will be designated for MS Cooper/Jobe/Pinkerton Halls while the westernmost northbound lane is designated for thru traffic (to 12th Street) only.

A bevy of activities is scheduled for students to enjoy themselves the last weekend before classes officially begin on Monday.

“We also want to encourage all of our residents to participate in the Week of Welcome events as well as the events sponsored by residential life,” said Macke. “These activities are designed to help folks get to know each other and begin our residents’ connection to Tech.”
