Sales tax numbers up 6 percent in region in September

UPPER CUMBERLAND – The Upper Cumberland saw a more than 6 percent increase in state sales tax collections in September, led by double-digit gains in Cannon, Overton and White counties.

The region’s three largest collectors also saw positive gains last month, led by Cumberland (7.6), Putnam (5.5) and Warren (5.2). It’s the latest report issued by the Tennessee Department of Revenue.

The UC kept pace with the state and showed marked improvement from its August numbers, when the gain was a more modest 3.8 percent. While Jackson (-6.3), DeKalb (-1.5) and Clay (-0.05) saw decreases year-over-year, the rest of region was up, including Smith (9.8), Van Buren (6.9), Pickett (6.5), Fentress (4.2) and Macon (0.8).

Collections, considered just one measure of economic activity, are based on state sales taxes; local option taxes are excluded. Data lags by one month; for example, September numbers reflect August activity.
