WHITE COUNTY — Dr. Alan Drake, a family practitioner in Sparta, is the recipient of Capella Healthcare’s 2015 Physician Leadership Award.

The award was presented in early August during the company’s annual National Physician Leadership Group conference in Coronado, California.

“Dr. Alan Drake has faithfully served his patients, his community, and his local hospital since August of 1985,” said Mark Medley, EVP, president of hospital operations, who presented the award. “He is a gifted leader, having served in numerous leadership roles for the hospital, including as chief of staff, a member of the board of trustees, as physician advisor for the hospital, a member of the hospital’s Physician Leadership Group (PLG) and as a charter member of Capella’s National Physician Leadership Group (NPLG). His commitment to the NPLG has benefited other hospitals and physicians throughout the country. And his local service has benefitted the hospital’s patients as well as the community.”

Drake is affiliated with Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital – formerly Highlands Medical Center – which was part of Capella Healthcare for more than seven years, the last three as part of the Capella Saint Thomas Health Network. The hospital transitioned last month to full ownership by Saint Thomas Health.

Since completing his medical training and moving to Sparta, Drake and his wife, Sheree, have raised two sons, grown his independent practice, and given to their community, the hospital and their church.

“Dr. Drake’s life demonstrates his strong belief that each individual is important and uniquely gifted. He works hard to have a positive influence on everyone he meets.” – Mark Medley, EVP, president of hospital operations at Capella

For many years, Drake has been the volunteer physician for the White County School District, performing athletic physicals free of charge for any student athlete in need. Drake is also frequently seen on the sidelines or field providing his medical expertise. He is also actively involved in his church, where he serves with the music and drama ministries, teaches and has participated in a number of medical mission trips to countries including Peru, the Bahamas, Swaziland, Sumbawa and Brazil.

“Dr. Drake’s life demonstrates his strong belief that each individual is important and uniquely gifted. He works hard to have a positive influence on everyone he meets,” Medley said. “Through his daily interactions, leadership roles and personal commitments, he encourages people to use their talents, positions and service opportunities to the very best of their abilities – and always for the betterment of the community.”

Bill Little, CEO of Saint Thomas Highlands Hospital, said, “The management team and medical staff are pleased and honored with the recognition of Capella Healthcare’s 2015 Physician Leadership Award for Dr. Drake. He has dedicated his career to improving the delivery of quality health care in our community. He has tirelessly volunteered his time and services to ensure our local hospital delivers patient care that is safe and that our medical staff and hospital staff are aligned and working in concert for our patients.”
