Trump sails to victory Tuesday night, economy said to be major issue for many voters
Presumed president-elect Donald Trump rode a red wave to victory Tuesday night as Republicans earned the White House, grabbed a majority in the Senate and are on track to maintain control of the house of representatives. Putnam County showed up big for the Republican ticket following that national trend.
Nationally, Trump has garnered 293 electoral votes as of this writing. 270 is needed for victory. Trump swept the so-called “Blue Wall” states — Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — and has a path to a possible clean sweep of all the battleground states. He also currently leads in the popular vote over challenger vice-president Kamala Harris, 71,807,115 votes to 69,915,719 votes, respectively.
In Putnam County, President-elect Trump garnered 25,530 votes while Harris managed only 8,985. Those numbers are in line with state totals where Trump gathered 1,964,499 votes and Harris managed 1,055,039.
Trump won every county in the Upper Cumberland, easily.
In other elections:
- Republican Ryan Williams earned 73.73% of the vote to defeat Democrat Amber Taylor and win reelection to House District 42 (D 42). D 42 covers the western two-thirds of Putnam County.
- Republican Speaker of The House Cameron Sexton also won reelection as representative in District 25 (D 25) which covers the eastern third of Putnam County and Cumberland County.
