Preferred Pallets in Putnam to close

COOKEVILLE – Preferred Pallets Inc., a Putnam County pallet manufacturer and recycler, is closing.

Ten workers will be affected by the shut down, according to a mandatory notice filed this week with the state. The closure began Tuesday, July 8, and is scheduled to end Wednesday, July 30. The company is located at 105 Ridgedale Drive, Cookeville.

Owner Monte Lowe gave no comment or reason for the decision other than saying “we regret we’re going out of business.” Preferred Pallets has been servicing the Southeast for more than 38 years, delivering wood pallets, skids, crates or boxes; reconditioning pallet scrap; picking up and recycling pallet scrap or grind wood; and heat treating pallets, dunnage and containers for export.

According to the notice, employees at the facility are not represented by a collective bargaining agreement.

It’s the second layoff noticed in the filed with the state in the Upper Cumberland this month. Last week, The Berry Family of Nurseries, 1532 Vaughn Lane, Smithville, said it will close by Sept. 30. The total number of affected workers there is 257.
