Cumberland Medical Center Expands AI Prostate Treatment as Covenant Health Rolls Out HYDROS System
(UCBJ) – Covenant Health’s Cumberland Medical Center (CHCMC) is expanding access to an artificial intelligence-powered treatment for enlarged prostates after becoming the first hospital in East Tennessee to offer the HYDROS Robotic System. The system uses minimally invasive therapy to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), a condition affecting more than 40 million men in the United States.
The treatment uses ultrasound-guided technology and a waterjet to remove excess prostate tissue. Larry Helm underwent the procedure on March 31, 2025.
“It’s changed my life, because I’m not getting up four to five times in the evening anymore,” Helm said. “There’s been evenings where I slept through without having to get up at all.”
According to a release, the technology allows physicians to tailor treatment while reducing damage to surrounding tissue.
“This technology allows us to personalize treatment for each patient while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue,” according to Urologist Dr. William Young. “For many men, that means effective symptom relief with fewer side effects and a faster recovery.”
The success of the program at Cumberland Medical Center (CMC) led Covenant Health to expand the technology to Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.
