New Vascular Surgeon Joins Cookeville Regional

Cookeville  Dr. Alex Sapp got into medicine to make a difference.

He joins fellow vascular surgeon Dr. Michael Sywak at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

“It’s the patients that I enjoy the most, seeing a difference in their quality of life,” he said. “I enjoy the follow-ups, being able to see and understand a lot of issues, which is what makes it worthwhile.”

Sapp earned his medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia. Prior to that, he earned his Bachelor of Science in biology and minor in chemistry from Lagrange College in Lagrange, Georgia.

He went on to complete a general surgery residency at the Medical Center Navicent Health in Macon Georgia. He recently completed his vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Vascular surgery deals with blood vessels, including veins, artery issues, blocked vessels, enlarged arteries and aortic dissections.

The relationship with the cardiothoracic surgeons is a very important aspect of patient care.

“We have to work as a team to optimize the best patient care,” he said. “I look forward to working with Dr. Sywak and others to achieve that.”

He chose Cookeville to practice due to its small-town atmosphere.

“I come from a small town, so this atmosphere is great,” he said.

He enjoys spending time with his wife, Brooke, and three-year-old son, Cason, along with watching football and attending church.

He also enjoys the outdoors, mainly hunting and fishing, another feature that drew him here.

“We are happy to have Dr. Sapp join the team here at Cookeville Regional Medical Center,” said Paul Korth, CEO. “The vascular program here is growing and his arrival brings another level of care to the patients who need vascular surgery.”

Dr. Sapp is taking new patients. Call the Cookeville Regional Cardiac, Vascular and Thoracic Surgeons office at 931-783-4269 to set up an appointment.
