PCSS Summer Learning & Bridge Camp registration open until May 1

COOKEVILLE – Walking through the halls of last year’s Putnam County School System (PCSS) Summer Learning and Bridge Camp program, one would hear laughter and see learning as activities that incorporated education and fun were being performed, from science to art. PCSS is bringing their four-week Summer Learning Camp and Bridge Camp back June 1 – 30, 2022, at no cost to families.

Registration is now open for caregivers to register their children for the camp held Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration ends May 1.

“Last year’s camps were extremely successful, and we are thrilled to have them again this year to continue closing the learning loss gaps caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Diana Wood, PreK-4 Instructional Supervisor. “We will provide a fun and safe environment for every student as our certified teachers help students get ready for the next grade this summer.”

Summer Learning Camp is available for students currently in Kindergarten-4th grade, and Bridge Camp is open for students currently in 5th-7th grade. The PCSS operates these camps, and certified teachers will be leading students in and out of the classroom. The summer curriculum combines academics and fun into a complete learning experience. Both camps will have six hours of daily programming that includes four hours of reading and math instruction, one hour of intervention and one hour of physical activity or “play.” STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Math) will be incorporated throughout the week.

Students are not required to attend the Summer Learning Camps, but those registered will have their attendance taken each day, and a state-adopted pre- and post-assessment will take place.

“This assessment is so we can track the student’s progress during the four weeks. This program will incorporate fun within four hours a day of math and reading instruction as well as an hour each day for physical activity,” said Dr. Sharon Griggs, 5-8th Instructional Supervisor for the PCSS.

LEAPS is blending this summer with the learning camps, so if a student has been enrolled in LEAPS this past school year, they can register for the learning camps, and on the Friday, there is no camp. School-Aged Care (SAC) will also be available for currently enrolled students.

“The reason for the blend is to provide early drop-off and late pick-up for parents of the camps,” said Brenda Hughett, Extended Learning Program Coordinator. During the day, all students will be participating in the summer learning curriculum and activities. Before and after camp care is available through LEAPs from 6-8 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. for currently enrolled LEAPS students.

Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided for students at the learning camps. Transportation for students will be available. Summer Learning Camp locations will be Burks Elementary, Park View Elementary and Baxter Primary School. Bridge Camp will be held at Prescott South Middle School.

“We are looking forward to seeing our students in June. The most important thing we need is for all caregivers to register before May 1, so we can prepare for their children to have a great learning opportunity this summer,” said Wood. “It is going to be a great time of learning and fun.”
