UPDATED: TDOT rejects downtown Crossville bid

CROSSVILLE – It appears a downtown revitalization project in Cumberland County has hit a snag – yet again.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has rejected the only bid for the Crossville effort that would replace the city’s more than 90-year-old water system; putt in street drainage and improve lighting; and pave and improve traffic signalization, among other items. Highways Inc., the sole bidder on the project back in December, did not use the required bid form, TDOT said, and thus, the project must be bid again.

The Crossville city council discussed the issue at its Tuesday meeting and voted to rebid the project. The city council had initially gave approval to Highways’ nearly $7.6 million bid in January before it was handed over for TDOT’s review.

Had they vote no, they would have needed vote to release the $4.22-plus million in grant funds that have been allocated toward the project, Francis Carson, a Downtown Crossville board member, wrote in an email.
