Tech’s Oakley STEM Center to Host Children’s Events Throughout The Fall

Cookeville – Tennessee Tech University‘s Millard Oakley STEM Center will host several events with STEM activities beginning with the Scrumdiddlyumptious workshop tonight, Sept. 30, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

STEM Fab Fridays are free events for third – eighth grade held twice every fall and spring. On Fab Fridays, learners and their families will engage in STEM-related hands-on activities. These events provide a safe space to learn about science, technology, engineering and math while also fostering community.

“As a STEM-infused university, it is essential that we continue to provide access to high-quality learning experiences for students in our regional communities. These events are free and allow families and kids in our region to learn about STEM and enjoy the themed activities,” Carlos Galindo, outreach coordinator said.

STEM Mischief Managed will be held on Oct. 28 from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., for third – eighth grades. STEM Welcome to the Family workshop will be on Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for PreK- third grades. All the Safari Saturdays and Fab Fridays are flexible events and allow families to come and go, however, a guardian must be always with their learner.

The STEM Center held a circus themed STEM workshop on Sept. 10, which was open to learners from PreK- third grade.  Much like a circus, families and their young learners experienced a world of wonder and entertainment with a mathematical and scientific twist. Some activities included slime making, virtual reality, building with Legos, and coding robots.

Not only was this a great opportunity for elementary school children, but it was also beneficial for college students, as these events rely heavily on volunteers, according to Galindo. Graduate students, faculty, and staff showed up to provide learners with a positive experience.

Circus Safari Saturday is family-friendly and allows attendees to come and go as they please. These events are held during both fall and spring with a change of theme to keep learners engaged.

The STEM Center is located at 155 W 7th St, Cookeville, Tennessee. To register at for the Scrumdiddlyumptious STEM workshop visit. https://tf.tntech.edu/machform/view.php?id=1319763. For more information about the STEM Center visit https://www.tntech.edu/education/stem/index.php.
