Tennessee Tech has been named one of the Best Value Engineering schools of 2018.
COOKEVILLE – In a study conducted by Best Value Schools to find the top engineering programs in the nation, Tennessee Tech ranked 25th overall and No. 1 in the state of Tennessee.
“We’ve known for a long time that we provide some of the lowest cost degrees in engineering, computer science and engineering technology,” said Darrell Hoy, interim dean for the College of Engineering. “When you match that with high-quality instruction, hands-on learning and opportunities to obtain co-ops, internships and jobs with major industry partners, that is a good deal for students.”
The College of Engineering (CoE) is Tech’s largest college with 2,623 undergraduate, 106 masters and 105 doctoral students. CoE offers degrees in chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, general and basic engineering, manufacturing and engineering technology, and mechanical engineering.
“Our primary focus is to see our students succeed and be job-ready when they graduate,” said Hoy. “One of the ways we do that is by keeping tuition as low as possible, while providing resources through scholarships, work-study programs and internships and co-ops with our industry partners. We have amazing alumni who help by investing their time, talent and wealth in our students.”
Best Value Schools used the College Navigator database to assemble a list of all the four-year, public and non-profit colleges and universities in the United States that offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering. Out of the 500 such qualifying institutions in the country, the list was trimmed to schools with a maximum annual tuition of $25,000 (this included in-state and out-of-state rates).
From the nearly 300 remaining candidates, only those with Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accreditation were selected. Those that remained – approximately 170 – were subject to additional scrutiny on four main indicators: number of accredited programs, STEM majors, early career pay and net price.
Using the previous criteria, each school was awarded a total point value out of a maximum possible 100. Tech earned a score of 58.79, recognizing it as the only school in the state of Tennessee to be ranked.
“From the outside, it looks like Tennessee Tech has all the typical trappings of the best engineering colleges: six accredited degree programs, a $60,000-plus average early salary for graduates and a large research budget,” Best Value Schools stated on its website. “But it is programs like the MoLE-SI (Mobile Learning Environment and Systems Infrastructure) — a collaborative digital platform with a full software suite available remotely — and the eccentric Order of Engineers that reveal what a unique learning environment Tennessee Tech really is. With its MoLE-SI system, Tennessee Tech is quickly becoming one of the best engineering schools for online students.”
