COOKEVILLE – After one week of classes, Tennessee Tech’s preliminary enrollment data indicates overall enrollment will be up this fall semester over last fall.
Tennessee Tech University officials announced information about incoming students for this academic year, along with preliminary enrollment figures, today. The university welcomed more than 2,900 new students this fall, including more than 1,700 new freshmen and 325 new graduate students.
“We start this new academic year again appreciative for the opportunity to serve over 10,000 unique, passionate and dedicated students,” said Brandon Johnson, Tech’s vice president for enrollment management and career placement. “This student body shares a common bond and I believe they will keep their Wings Up by encouraging and caring for one another as they continue to navigate the world around them. We believe in them. And we are thankful that they believe in Tech.”
For the incoming freshman class, the average ACT score is 24 and the average high school GPA a 3.66. The incoming class includes123 students who scored at least a 32 on the ACT, with four scoring a perfect 36, and more than 550 students who had a perfect 4.0 GPA in high school.
More than 882 are coming to Tech with college credits in hand, thanks primarily to dual enrollment opportunities at their high school.
Freshman students come from 83 of Tennessee’s 95 counties, with the top 10 being Putnam, Rutherford, Wilson, Williamson, Sumner, Davidson, Cumberland, Hamilton, Knox and Overton. Outside of Tennessee, first-year students come from 23 other states, with the highest percentage this year from Georgia.
Top majors for the 2020 freshman students include mechanical engineering, nursing, computer science, biology, exercise science, civil engineering, chemical engineering, agriculture, business, and education.
Preliminary enrollment is more than 10,200. The official enrollment census, which is taken on the 10th day of classes each fall, is Sept. 8.
