U.S. has experienced a surge in new business applications in 2025
In Putnam County, 38 new business listings were added in December. 30 of those were for manufacturing, and the other 8 were retail establishments.

Nationally, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. experienced a surge in new business applications in 2025, with entrepreneurship skyrocketing. New business trends have been driven by advancements in technology and a growing focus on sustainability.
Key areas of growth are:
- Technology: Cybersecurity, AI and automation tools, and mobile app development are growing sectors.
- E-commerce and Digital Services: Social media platforms and e-commerce are a central part of the small business economy, driving significant revenue.
- Health and Wellness: Personalized health services, telemedicine, and sustainable consumer products are also on the rise.
In the coming year, Middle Tennessee and the Upper Cumberland will see a lot of growth in expanding chain restaurants and retail. Some of those are:
- In-N-Out Burger
- Wawa
- Trader Joe’s
- Target
- Home Depot
- Whataburger
- And more
