Monterey recently celebrated the dedication of the Nathan Walker Sports Complex at Black Bottom.
Built in 2022, the facility was a dream realized for Burkes Middle School’s soccer teams, thanks to a $200,000 appropriation from the state Legislature. The dreamer, then Mayor Nathan Walker, is now the facility’s namesake.
Mayor Walker died from an aggressive form of cancer before the dream could be realized.

“This multipurpose facility, home to the Burks Panthers and Wildcat Soccer Teams, now features a new facility sign, renovated bathrooms and concessions, and resurfaced softball and soccer fields,” according to Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter.
The project was a joint project between Monterey City, Putnam County and a state Grant .
“It was great to have Mayor Walker’s children with us from Texas,” said Porter of the event.
The facility is located at 316 S. Whittaker Street.
“Congratulations to everyone involved with this project,” said Porter.
