Business expansion on the rise in the Upper Cumberland

Business formation and business expansion are on the rise in the Upper Cumberland and Putnam County. The area is growing fast. Meanwhile, on a national level, the jobs report fell below expectations.

According to ADP’s National Employment Report, over 32,000 jobs were lost nationally in the private sector in September. That is the largest monthly drop since March 2023, according to reports, and a significant reversal from earlier expectations.

In breaking down these national trends, the most losses came in the leisure and hospitality, professional/business services, financial activities, and trade/transportation/utilities sectors.

Education and health services grew over that same period.

According to ADP, “rebenchmarking of data” was a major factor in the decline (which reduced the September job count by 43,000). There was one area that saw significant growth in September. Education and health services added 33,000 jobs.

In support of small businesses during the decline, some grants were available for businesses struggling following natural disasters or infrastructure failures. One of which, the DoorDash Local Business Disaster Relief Fund ($15,000 small business grant), accepted applications in September. AT&T and other recurring grants were also available.

The grants helped small businesses brave the storm.

In September, 56 businesses registered a license in Putnam County: 35 manufacturing and 21 retail. Check out the list below.
