Knoxville Bomb Squad has possession of device

Crossville – Yesterday, a “military-grade mortar” was discovered by a business owner in Crossville, prompting a large response by authorities. The Upper Cumberland Business Journal has learned the device was found in a storage container next to Watsons Auto Sales East near the Royal Inn in the 3400 block of N Main Street.

The area was soon locked down and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), the Crossville Police Department, Crossville Fire, Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency (CCEMA) and the Knoxville Bomb Squad were called to the scene before the mortar was later rendered safe by investigators.

The CCEMA wrote on social media around 3:30 ET yesterday that the Knoxville Bomb Squad had possession of the device. The CCSO later released a statement.

“Sheriff Casey Cox, along with the entire Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, expresses sincere gratitude to the Crossville Police Department, Crossville Fire, Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency, and the Knoxville Bomb Squad for their swift response and assistance in handling this potentially dangerous situation. The cooperation and professionalism exhibited by these agencies are testaments to their dedication in keeping our community safe,” the release said.

The area was reopened to traffic and the incident is under further investigation by the CCSO and “other relevant agencies.” This is an ongoing story. Check back for updates.
