Each episode explores an economic issue connected to students’ academic and career interests

Tennessee Tech University honors students are bringing economics to life through a new community podcast series launched in their principles of microeconomics course.

The class, taught by Chelsea Dowell, lecturer in the College of Business, challenges students to research, write, produce and host episodes for the Everyone Loves Economics podcast. Each episode explores an economic issue connected to students’ academic and career interests, showing how economics touches everyday life.

“Dr. Dowell’s creative approach encourages students to make meaningful connections between economics and their own fields of study,” said Lindsey Roberts, director of Tech Honors. “The launch of the podcast series is a shining example of how our honors students are empowered to expand their perspectives. We are grateful to Dr. Dowell and the economics department for providing opportunities that inspire curiosity and interdisciplinary understanding across our campus community.”

Melina Hamm, a junior music major, produced the podcast’s first episode, “Who Owns Your Voice?” Her episode examines the costs and benefits of using artificial intelligence in music production. Hamm interviewed experts, including faculty members, to better understand copyright law, music technology and the creative process.

“Creating the podcast episode was a rewarding experience,” Hamm said. “This project not only helped me learn about interviews and production, but also gave me the chance to explore a subject I’m passionate about and share my insights with an audience.”

Hunter Pittman, a junior economics major, used his episode to examine the impact of Nashville’s party buses on the region’s economic development. Altogether, more than a dozen honors students have already recorded episodes featuring interviews with Tech economists, engineers and other experts.

“I am incredibly proud of these students and all they have accomplished,” Dowell said. “They represent a diverse group of majors across campus, and they worked hard to share their economic analysis in a fun and engaging way with the community.”

New episodes of Everyone Loves Economics will be released monthly and are available on the Tech websiteSpotify and Amazon Music.
