Local company stepped up when Checkers was struggling to find a contractor

It’s been a long road for the fast-food giant, but Checkers has finally cut the ribbon on its grand opening at 446 N Willow Avenue in Cookeville.

Ground broke way back in August 2023 between Brian Waggoner’s internal Medicine building and Willow Avenue Express Laundry Center. Checkers & Rally’s announced the three multi-unit development agreements that would bring 40 new restaurants to TN in November of 2022.

Franchisee Michael Rezi said he wanted to grow the brand by 15 units statewide.

“We are very pleased to be working with some incredible franchisees …,” said Kris McDonald, Vice President of Development at Checkers & Rally’s. “We look forward to seeing our franchisees succeed.”

Managing partner Doiron Clowers announced the official opening last month after construction delays that left the public wondering if the restaurant was still a go.Clowers, who calls Cookeville home, says a location here has always been the ultimate plan.

“I’ve actually called Cookeville home since 2010, so the ultimate plan has always been Cookeville first,” Clowers told the UCBJ. “I might be biased, but I personally believe that Cookeville is a perfect area to bring a new business. The city is rapidly growing, but it still has the support and feel of a small town. Hopefully, Cookeville will be as excited about Checkers as we are about bringing Checkers to Cookeville.”

A local company stepped up when Checkers was struggling to find a contractor for the job amid the delay.

“Luckily for us, we were fortunate enough to find an amazing local company to not only continue the project but correct mistakes and find time to do so on an already packed schedule,” said Clowers.

Checkers, whose menu includes popular items such as burgers, fry-seasoned chicken tenders, classic wings, milkshakes and various combo meals, also looks to hire (between full and part-time employees) around 40 people.

“Whether this is your first job, you are working your way through school, this is just a steppingstone, or you are looking for a permanent career, we are happy to be here,” said Clowers.

Clowers say customers are neighbors, friends and family.

“We will strive to serve only hot, quality food, with excellent customer service and in a timely manner, so that after you leave, you are already thinking about your next visit,” said Clowers.
