Move looks to “improve the economic welfare” of the City of Cookeville

The Cookeville City Council approved the annual budget Thursday evening, including a 7-cent property tax increase. Along the way, it also approved an ordinance that looks to appropriate funds for financial aid to public service, nonprofit and charitable organizations.

The move looks to “improve the economic welfare” of the City of Cookeville.

“$105,000 to be appropriated to the Chamber to promote the Economic welfare of the citizens of the city, with $50,000 designated for the Highlands Economic Partnership, $25,000 designated for Workforce development,” according to official documents.

$50,000 will also be designated to CityScape to “promote the general welfare of the citizens of the city.”

$20,000 of that will be used to support the annual Cookeville Fall FunFest.

The ordinance appropriates $1,135,940. That is an increase of 22 from the $926,450 allocated last fiscal year, according to officials. $1,120,940 is coming from the general fund and $15,000 from the utilities fund. $974,490 is for governmental partners/Joint ventures while $161,000 is allocated for nonprofits (allocations recommended by the committee).
