Cookeville Christmas Parade changes theme due to copyright issues

“A Cookeville Storybook Christmas” promises an evening of family fun

COOKEVILLE —Organizers of the 2018 Cookeville-Putnam County Christmas Parade have chosen “A Cookeville Storybook Christmas” as the parade’s new theme.

This new theme replaces “A Whoville Christmas,” which had originally been chosen in an effort to honor the heartwarming story of Dr. Seuss’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” However, this is a copyrighted theme that can only be used with permission from Dr. Seuss Enterprises, which must license all use of the Grinch and Whoville trademarks.

When Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. was consulted, due to contractual restrictions, the company politely refused to grant the use of their licensed material. Therefore, out of respect for the Dr. Seuss brand and in the interest of employing an abundance of caution, the organizers intend to fully honor this request by removing all reference to Dr. Seuss and the Grinch/Whoville story from the parade theme, logo, messaging and décor.

Parade organizers also respectfully ask that all parade participants kindly join them in honoring Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ request by not dressing as Seuss characters or referring to any of Seuss’s classic characters or themes in parade floats, signage, etc., either during the parade or in promotion of this event.

Organizers say they are committed to making Cookeville’s 52nd annual Christmas Parade the best possible community parade experience for all involved.
