Transition also clarifies the type of credentials students earn
Fortis College Cookeville campus has changed its name from Fortis Institute in Cookeville to Fortis College in Cookeville (FCC), according to the company. FCC will host a ribbon-cutting and open house in the coming weeks.
Check back for updates.
Fortis is a degree-granting institution (a practice that will continue with the name change), and the new name “more accurately represents the level of education and credentials offered to students,” according to the release.
The transition clarifies the type of credentials students earn, ensuring that employers and the community recognize the academic rigor and career preparation the college provides.
“For our students and community, this change provides clarity,” said James Williamson, campus president of Fortis College in Cookeville. “The term ‘college’ better reflects the academic rigor of our programs and the value of the credentials our graduates earn. While our name is changing, our mission remains the same: preparing students for in-demand careers through hands-on, career-focused education.”
As demand continues to grow for trained professionals in health care and skilled trades across the Upper Cumberland region, Fortis officials said the updated name better aligns the institution with employer expectations “and workforce development efforts, while providing students with clear pathways to careers that require degree-level preparation.”
The name change does not affect:
- current students
- programs
- faculty
- campus leadership
“Students will experience no disruption to their education, and the college will continue to operate with the same academic standards, support services and commitment to student success,” according to the release.
The name change was approved by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges effective Jan. 5, 2026. Signs and marketing materials will soon change.
