Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits nationally in August stood at 1,475,000

Putnam construction numbers rebounded in September following a slower August, according to Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter.

In August the county saw 28 permits for $6.5M of construction, 17 being for new single-family residential homes. Compare that to September when Putnam had 37 permits for $6.2M, 22 being new single-family homes generating $25,906 in fees.

Those fees operate the Building Codes Department, according to Porter. Numbers do not include any of the four cities. Nationally, construction numbers are as follows according to a report by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development:

  • Building Permits: 1,475,000
  • Housing Starts: 1,356,000
  • Housing Completions: 1,788,000

Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits nationally in August stood at 1,475,000.

“This is 4.9% above the revised July rate of 1,406,000, but is 6.5% below the Aug. 2023 rate of 1,578,000,” according to the report.

There were also 967,000 authorizations for single family homes in August, 2.8% above the revised July figure of 941,000 while privately owned housing grew to 1,356,000. That is 9.6% above the August rate of 1,305,000. Single family housing starts in August were 992,000 nationally, according to the report.
