Tennessee Governor Bill Lee on Thursday appointed Matthew Colvard as District Attorney General of the 31st Judicial District, which covers Warren and Van Buren counties.

Colvard has been serving as Interim District Attorney General since late October, following the resignation of General Chris Stanford. Born and raised in the area, he previously worked as a Criminal Investigator and then as an Assistant District Attorney in the 21st Judicial District.

“To the citizens of Warren and Van Buren Counties, I look forward to serving you through the August 2026 election and, if you choose, well beyond. My commitment is simple. I intend to strengthen our partnership with law enforcement, support meaningful rehabilitation when offenders are amenable to rehabilitation, and pursue firm, decisive consequences for repeat offenders who threaten the safety and stability of our communities. Justice must be fair, but it must also be effective,” according to Colvard.

He has served as an Assistant District Attorney in the 31st Judicial District for the past 15 years.

“Governor Lee’s appointment of Matthew Colvard reflects a commitment to strong, principled leadership in the 31st Judicial District,” said Stephen Crump, Executive Director of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference. “Matthew’s deep roots in this community and his steady dedication to victims’ rights will serve Warren and Van Buren counties well. We look forward to his continued leadership in the pursuit of justice.”

Colvard, an Army veteran, earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee and his juris doctor from the University of Tennessee College of Law.

The Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference was created by the General Assembly in 1961 to provide for a more prompt and efficient administration of justice in the courts of the state.

It is composed of the elected District Attorneys General from the state’s 32 judicial districts.
