MCMINNVILLE – On Friday, Feb. 19, PBS will showcase “The Best of Bluegrass Underground,” a one-hour special featuring the top performances from the first five seasons of the nine-time Emmy-winning Americana music series.

“The Best of Bluegrass Underground” features a mix of Americana’s hottest young performers (Jason Isbell, Old Crow Medicine Show), iconic artists (Lucinda Williams, Vince Gill, Doyle Lawson, Widespread Panic) and rising stars (Sarah Jarosz, Davina & The Vagabonds).

Dubbed, “The Greatest Show Under Earth,” Bluegrass Underground is filmed at Cumberland Caverns in the world-famous Volcano Room, 333 feet beneath the Cumberland Plateau. Bluegrass Underground has been described as “Austin City Limits-meets-Nova” for its unique combination of world-class performances and natural beauty, all showcased with award-winning lighting, sound and direction.

The special will air just prior to filming for season VI next month.

“We have been so proud to partner with local PBS member stations in presenting Bluegrass Underground,” concert series founder Todd Mayo said in a release. “But we are genuinely thrilled to be bringing this incredibly unique concert experience to an even wider audience as part of PBS’ national prime time lineup on Feb. 19. It’s a bucket list venue and this is bucket list television.”

The Best of Bluegrass Underground will air at 9 p.m. CST on PBS stations nationwide as part of PBS Arts Friday night programming; viewers should check their local listings. Season VI of Bluegrass Underground will film April 1-3 for a September premiere. Artists include The Cox Family, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Mac McAnally, Jason & The Scorchers, Drivin‘ N’ Cryin’, The Dave Rawlings Machine, as well as groundbreaking newer artists like Sierra Hull, R St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Lone Bellow, Hurray For the Riff Raff, JJ Grey & Mofro and The Suffers.
