Two Upper Cumberland businesses, Swan Ridge Lake Resort and Rockcastle Farms, have been sold to DH Development, LLC, according to April Smith Patterson, who along with her mother, Janie Smith, and brother Shane Smith, were owners of the properties that were established by their late father, Doug Smith.

Mitchell Creek Marina is under contract with the pending sale awaiting approval by the Army Corps of Engineers, Smith said.

Patterson emphasized that at this time the Marina is still owned and operated by the Smith family.

Patterson expressed mixed emotions regarding the pending sale of the properties, especially Mitchell Creek Marina.

“It’s been an amazing journey since the first day I remember my Dad telling me he had bought a marina in 2006,” she recalled. “I thought to myself, ‘Dad, we barely do well taking our boat to the lake without getting stranded or towed in.’ But, Dad was a visionary, and for those who saw the Marina before we bought it, you know what I’m talking about.”

Patterson said that she has confidence that the new owners of Swan Ridge Lake Resort and Rockcastle Farms will continue to serve the residents well, and that if the sale of Mitchell Creek Marina goes as planned, there will be a continuity of service and hospitality to the vacation spot’s visitors.

Patterson emphasized that the family’s other businesses are continuing to grow, and the sale of the resort properties will allow focus to return to the company’s core businesses.

“Honest Abe is experiencing exciting growth and developing new product lines as the upswing in the housing market provides them good momentum,” Patterson said.

Patterson recently opened The Mill Storehouse, a retail shop with a physical store in Algood, a mobile van store and an online shop. Barky Beaver Mulch and Soil Mix has added retailers throughout Kentucky and Tennessee and has experienced expansion in its commercial division with the introduction of an innovative new growing mix.

Moss Sawmills, Happy Trucking and G.F. Hardwoods, headquartered at Moss, are continuing to serve clients and are also seeing renewed growth as the building industry recovers from several years of stagnation.
