State sales tax collections see summer spike in UC

UPPER CUMBERLAND – Any concern that the UC might be headed for a summer slowdown in terms of its state sales tax collections was quelled with the most recent Tennessee Department of Revenue report. In the month of June, the Upper Cumberland saw a 7.0 percent increase, once again topping the state’s gain as well as boasting five counties in the double digits.

Putnam, the largest collector in the 14-county region, was among those with an increase of 10.2 percent. Van Buren (16.4), DeKalb (12.6), Jackson (12.3), Smith (12.1) were also in double figures. Others seeing healthy gains were Warren (8.9), White (8.4), Clay (7.1), Macon (6.8), Pickett (5.8) and Fentress (5.2). Cumberland County also saw an increase of 2.5 percent.

Decreases were noted in just two counties: Overton (-12.6) and Cannon (-2.1)

Collections, which are considered just one measure of economic activity, are based on state sales taxes; local option taxes are excluded. Sales data lags by one month; for example, June numbers May reflect activity.
