Habitat for Humanity Is Making Progress in Overton County

LIVINGSTON – Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity (UCHFH) recently acquired a buildable lot in Overton County. Habitat for Humanity’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. UCHFH’s goal is to select a qualified family by February 2020 and to start building the home next fall. But, before that family can move in they will need to complete about 500 hours of sweat equity that will include financial literacy courses, working in the ReStore, and construction on someone else’s home as well as their own.

Last Thursday, UCHFH held a lot blessing and ceremonial ribbon cutting in partnership with the Livingston-Overton County Chamber. The event was held to celebrate the recent acquisition and to pray for success in finding a qualifying family. In attendance were members of the UCHFH Overton Community Board along with fellow chamber members. Pastor Craig Green of First Church led the prayer.

“We are thrilled about being one step closer to building a new home in Overton County and providing a hand up to a family in the community,” said Pam Ealey, executive director of UCHFH. “There is a lot of work ahead of us before we can start building, but it will be worth it.”

UCHFH is asking for community support as they prepare for construction next fall. You don’t have to swing a hammer to assist Habitat in Overton County, individuals can help in a variety of ways. People with various skill sets and areas of interest are needed to advance the work of UCHFH.

“Hard working volunteers are just as important as generous donors,” said Trent Carter, community outreach coordinator of UCHFH. “We will need plenty of people with diverse skills and life experience to achieve our goal.”

UCHFH is a non-profit Christian housing ministry that builds simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with God and families in need of decent shelter.
