Fraud alert: Beware of postcards advertising “free” braces

COOKEVILLE – The Tennessee Senior Medicare Patrol is warning of a new scam targeting Medicare beneficiaries. It says it’s received several reports of beneficiaries receiving postcards in different colors from The Joint and Back Institute with special notices concerning Medicare and insurance-covered back and knee support systems.

Beneficiaries should not call the number listed on the postcard. According to Medicare guidelines, Medicare only covers back and knee braces that are deemed medically necessary by a doctor with a prescription.

Fraudsters are hoping to get Medicare numbers so they can bill Medicare Part B for the equipment, or bill for more expensive braces or knee support systems.

If you received such postcard as seen below, report it to the Tennessee Senior Medicare Patrol at (866) 836-7677.
