CRMC Women’s Center adds second 3D mammogram system

COOKEVILLE – The Women’s Center at Cookeville Regional Medical Center continues to grow for the women of the Upper Cumberland by adding a second 3D mammography system.

“The demand for 3D mammograms has risen, and to meet that demand we have added a second system to create shorter wait times for patients who desire 3D over traditional 2D mammograms,” said Amanda Bain, Director of the Imaging Center at Cookeville Regional. “Our goal is to create a pleasing experience for the patient as well offering them the very best in breast health. This is just one more way we can better serve them.”

3D mammography produces a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue that helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures by reducing the effect of overlapping tissues.

“Many women will ask us what is the difference between 2D and 3D mammograms,” says Stephanie Jennings, Chief Mammographer at The Women’s Center at Cookeville Regional. “This is a great question for them to ask. One of the ways 3D mammography is different from traditional 2D mammography is with 2D, all the structures overlap each other when you look at the image. With 3D mammography, the sweeping motion uncovers the layers and ‘sections’ the breast into multiple images so the radiologist can view the structures even better. From the patient’s perspective, having a 3D mammogram performed is similar to a traditional mammogram. During a 3D mammogram exam, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles.”

The Women’s Center continues to stay on top of the latest in breast health. The center just recently  added the SmartCurve Stabilization System to provide a more comfortable mammogram for patients.

The breast imaging services at The Women’s Center are fully accredited in digital mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. It is the only comprehensive breast imaging center in the Upper Cumberland and the only one designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The Women’s Center is conveniently located in Cookeville Regional Medical Center’s Outpatient Imaging Center at 251 W. 3rd St., just one block from the hospital’s main campus.
